West Indies have appointed Monty Desai as the batting coach of the senior men’s team on a two-year contract.
Desai, who has held coaching roles with Afghanistan, Nepal, Indian regional teams and IPL teams Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Lions in a career of over 12 years, most recently worked with batsmen from the UAE and Canada.
“I am very excited to join a team with such a rich history in the world cricket arena, one that I myself grew up admiring,” Desai said in a statement. “I am very much looking forward to being part of a journey where I can help to create a winning work environment, learn and embrace a new culture, and build a ‘happy dressing room’ tradition alongside other excellent leaders.
“I am eager to join forces with head coach Phil Simmons and director of cricket, Jimmy Adams, and our captains, such that I may contribute in every possible way to the success of our team.”
Desai joined head coach Simmons’ set-up, which includes bowling coach Roddy Estwick and fielding coach Rayon Griffith, ahead of the limited-overs series against India, which starts on December 6 in Hyderabad.
“I have worked with Monty before and he is an excellent coach,” Simmons said. “He has proven he has the ability to get players to improve on their talent and also to perform better in matches. He has vast knowledge of the game and it is good he is starting here with us in India. I look forward to seeing him work with our batsmen in all formats as we look to get better in all areas.”

Ollie Robinson to miss the second Test against New Zealand as the ECB investigates racist and sexist tweets that came to light this week

England fast bowler Ollie Robinson has been suspended from international cricket pending an investigation into tweets he posted in 2012 and 2013 that used racist and sexist terms.
The posts came to light earlier this week when he made his Test debut against New Zealand.
Robinson, 27, was the pick of England’s bowlers in the drawn Test at Lord’s with seven wickets in the match and had released a statement on Wednesday apologising for his “thoughtless and irresponsible” tweets.
“England and Sussex bowler Ollie Robinson has been suspended from all international cricket pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation following historic tweets he posted in 2012 and 2013,” the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement on Sunday.
“He will not be available for selection for the second Test against New Zealand starting at Edgbaston on Thursday 10 June. Robinson will leave the England camp immediately and return to his county.”
Earlier in his post-match comments on Sunday, Joe Root said more had to be done to educate players “about how to behave in society”.
“Ollie’s learned a hard lesson. It’s unacceptable what he’s done,” Root said.

“He’s fronted up to the dressing room and the world.
“We’ve started doing a lot of good work as a team and we’ll continue to do that. We want to make the game as inclusive and diverse as we possibly can, and we’ll continue to keep looking at finding ways to make that possible.”
On Wednesday, Robinson said he was ashamed of the tweets, which he said were sent during a tough period in his life after he’d been fired by English county Yorkshire as a teenager.
“On the biggest day of my career so far, I am embarrassed by the racist and sexist tweets that I posted over eight years ago, which have today become public,” Robinson said.
“I want to make it clear that I’m not racist and I’m not sexist.
“I deeply regret my actions, and I am ashamed of making such remarks.
“I was thoughtless and irresponsible, and regardless of my state of mind at the time, my actions were inexcusable. Since that period, I have matured as a person and fully regret the tweets.”

Former England captain Nasser Hussain said Robinson’s tweets were “not acceptable” and had tarnished an otherwise memorable day in his career, but he also acknowledged that the fast bowler had apologised and recognised his mistake.
“You just can’t be doing this,” Hussain told Sky Sports. “It’s just not good enough, it’s just not on.
“But I also think we’re probably a bit of a cruel society if we don’t realise that an 18-year-old does make mistakes … and he’s got it horribly wrong and he’s fronted up.
“It does not make it right in anyway. (The tweets) are horrible, they are not right, and you should never say those things whether you’re 18 or 28.
“There is no room for racism, there is no room for online hate, there is no room for being a keyboard warrior just because it’s four in the morning and you’ve had a few beers. It is not acceptable.
“But he’s an 18-year-old lad who’s made a mistake, and we’ve all made mistakes. And it’s ruined the biggest day as a professional cricketer.”

Come to think of it, this is actually a decent T20 XI that could potentially play in a league somewhere around the world. Roy-Munro-Phillips are dangerous T20 players, while Labuschagne-Conway can steady the ship. Tom Curran and Neser lead the bowling line up along with Neil Wagner and all-rounder Campher. If dibbly dobbly Munro and leggie Marnus can chip in with a few overs as the 5th/6th bowler, this is a well-balanced team.
Here is a similar line up made up of retired international players. Several English players of the great 2011-2013 Test team as well as several who left South Africa during the apartheid suspension. The details are left as an exercise for the reader.

Jade Dernbach is the only out-and-out fast bowler, with Tony Greig, Basil D’Oliveira, & Grant Elliot as key all rounders. Part-timers Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott will be needed to complete the overs. Maybe fast bowler Stuart Meaker can replace a batsman for a more balanced line-up.
A Bit of Philosophy, Of Course
England famously won the 2019 World Cup with key contributions from opener Jason Roy, captain Eoin Morgan (Ireland), lead fast bowler Jofra Archer (Barbados), and player of the final Ben Stokes (New Zealand). Similarly, the 2018 FIFA World Cup was won by France, a team whose 23 member squad consisted of 15 members of African descent with the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba.
In either case, diversity won. Globalism and international travel have come to a halt in times of COVID & lockdowns. In these times, the stories of someone like a Devon Conway lightens the mood. Left everything, took a risk, worked hard, and fulfilled his dream.
Embrace change. Sometimes you have to leave from your birthplace in order to prosper, whether that is for education, work, or family. Go try something new.
Embrace others. Learning from others & learning about new cultures can only be a good thing. Embrace Diversity.
एकदिवसीय विश्वकप क्रिकेटमा १४ टिम र टी–ट्वान्टी २० टिमले सहभागिता जनाउने भएका छन् । आईसीसीले मंगलबार एकदिवसीय विश्वकप क्रिकेटमा सहभागी टिमको संख्या बढाएको हो ।
आईसीसीले एकदिवसीय विश्वकपमा टिमको संख्या बढाएर १४ बनाउने निर्णय गरेको छ । आईसीसीले २०२७ र २०३१ को विश्वकपमा १४ टिमले प्रतिस्पर्धा गर्ने जनाएको छ ।
यसअघि एकदिवसीय विश्वकपमा १० टिमले प्रतिस्पर्धा गर्दै आइरहेका थिए । त्यस्तै टी–ट्वान्टी विश्वकपको टिमको संख्या बढाएर २० टिम बनाइएको छ ।

यसअघि टी–ट्वान्टी विश्वकपमा १६ टिमले प्रतिस्पर्धा गर्दै आइरहेका थिए । आईसीसीले २०२४, २०२६, २०२८ र २०३० विश्वकपमा २० टिमले प्रतिस्पर्धा गर्ने जनाएको छ ।
त्यस्तै सन् २०२४ को विश्वकपपछि हरेक दुई वर्षमा टी–ट्वान्टी विश्वकप आयोजना गर्ने निर्णय समेत आईसीसीले गरेकाे छ ।
